while on vacation?

Leaving on vacation with peace of mind, without wondering if your plants will survive until you return: it's entirely possible, provided you plan a little in advance. The right solution mainly depends on the duration of your absence — a long weekend doesn't require the same preparation as three weeks abroad.

This guide offers a method adapted to each length of stay, as well as practical solutions so you'll never dread leaving again.

Before you leave: essential steps

🧺
The day before departure

Prepare the ground, regardless of duration

Water all your plants generously the day before you leave, then empty the saucers to prevent roots from sitting in stagnant water during your absence. Move pots away from sunny windows, which accelerate evaporation, and group your plants together to create a more humid and stable microclimate.

Short stay (2 to 5 days)

🧳
Simplest solution

A good watering before you leave is usually enough

For a short absence, most plants don't need anything more than abundant watering before you leave, combined with the essential steps above. For species that enjoy ambient humidity, a light misting of the foliage before leaving can help limit dehydration for the first few days.

and for three weeks. Adapt to the duration, not the other way around."

Medium stay (1 to 2 weeks)

💧
The most reliable solution

Slow-release self-watering globes or spikes

For one to two weeks of absence, slow-release self-watering systems are the most reliable and simplest solution to implement. Filled with water and planted directly into the potting mix, they gradually release the necessary moisture, without risk of overwatering unlike some DIY methods.

Drip irrigation system (set of 2)

Slow release and natural watering, ideal for covering one to two weeks of absence without intervention.

✔ Good to know Always test your self-watering system a few days before you leave to check the flow rate and adjust if necessary depending on the size of your pots.

Long absence (more than 2 weeks)

🤝
Beyond 2 weeks

Combine several solutions or get help

After two weeks, even the best self-watering systems show their limits. The safest solution is still to ask a friend or family member to come by once a week, possibly in addition to a drip system that will cover the needs between visits. Failing that, group your most sensitive plants in the coolest and least bright room of your home to slow down their water consumption.

⚠ Mistakes to avoid before leaving

Never overwater before leaving, hoping to "build up reserves" — excess stagnant water for several days promotes root rot much more certainly than a slight lack of water. Similarly, avoid moving your plants to an unusual location just before leaving: the adaptation time to new lighting can add unnecessary stress in addition to the lack of watering.

Summary by duration of absence

Duration Recommended solution Preparation
2 to 5 days Abundant watering before departure Move away from direct sunlight, empty saucers
1 to 2 weeks Slow-release self-watering system Test flow rate a few days before
More than 2 weeks Self-watering + friend/family visit Group sensitive plants in the shade

Finally, keep in mind that a plant that has suffered a little from drought during your absence usually recovers very well with normal watering upon your return — no need to panic if you find a few sad-looking leaves when you get back.
