Which plant purifies the air
in your home?
Volatile organic compounds emitted by furniture, formaldehyde from glues and varnishes, benzene from household products... the air in our homes is far from as pure as we imagine. Indoor plants don't replace good ventilation, but certain species truly stand out for their ability to absorb these pollutants and enrich the ambient air with oxygen.
This guide presents the most recognized plants for their air-purifying effect, their specific characteristics, and most importantly, how to truly optimize their action — because a single plant placed in a corner of the living room is not enough to transform the air in a room.

How does a plant purify the air?
A plant acts on the ambient air in two complementary ways. On the one hand, through photosynthesis, it absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen — an exchange that reverses slightly at night, but remains generally positive. On the other hand, its leaves and the microorganisms present in the potting soil capture and degrade certain volatile pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene, or trichloroethylene, common in particle board furniture, paints, and certain cleaning products.
It was a NASA study conducted in the 1980s that popularized the idea of "depolluting plants," by testing the effectiveness of several species in enclosed environments. The results, obtained in a laboratory on small airtight volumes, are not directly transferable to an apartment — but they allowed for the identification of the most promising species, which today remain a good basis for selection.

Chlorophytum (spider plant)
Often cited at the top of the list: it effectively absorbs formaldehyde and carbon monoxide, tolerates neglect, and easily produces plantlets that you can propagate to multiply your plants. Ideal for beginners.
Sansevieria (snake plant)
An interesting peculiarity: unlike most plants, it continues to absorb CO2 and release oxygen at night, making it an excellent choice for a bedroom. It can go weeks without watering.
Pothos
Known for its effectiveness against formaldehyde and benzene, the pothos has the advantage of growing quickly and tolerating low to medium light. Its trailing vines also make it an easy decorative plant to place anywhere.
Philodendron
A close cousin of the pothos, it shares its air-purifying qualities while offering more generous foliage. It appreciates indirect light and regular watering without overwatering.
Areca Palm
Its large volume of foliage makes it one of the most effective plants for humidifying the air and filtering benzene and trichloroethylene. However, it requires a little more attention to watering and light than a beginner-friendly plant.
Ficus (Elastica or Benjamina)
Effective against formaldehyde, the ficus has the advantage of making a real statement in a room thanks to its size. However, it is sensitive to changes in location and light, which often cause a temporary leaf drop.
Aloe vera
Less spectacular in terms of foliage volume, it remains effective against formaldehyde and has an additional advantage: its gel is traditionally used to soothe minor burns. A very good choice for a bright kitchen.

⚠ No magic solution
Studies conducted in real-world conditions (and not in hermetic laboratory chambers) show that the air-purifying effect of one or two plants on an entire room remains limited. For a real benefit, it is better to multiply plants rather than rely on just one, and especially to continue to ventilate daily — no plant replaces natural air renewal.
How to optimize the air-purifying effect in your home
A few simple principles allow you to get the most out of your plants, beyond simply choosing the species.

Prioritize large leaves, which offer a larger exchange surface.
Dust the foliage regularly: soiled leaves filter much less effectively.
Vary the species rather than multiplying the same plant, to cover a wider spectrum of pollutants.
Finally, keep in mind that the best "air-purifying plant" is the one you manage to keep healthy. A stressed or dying plant provides no benefits — a robust and well-maintained chlorophytum is better than a finicky ficus that loses its leaves in your living room.
